Mother/Monster

Controlling what we can’t is the contradiction of our times
The anti-thesis of good medicine with no cure set in its sights
Untested and untestable, one fix simply needs more
Geoengineering puts our life support system on life support
Some say that climate change can be solved through intellect
Big business and big green not respect or common sense
Bill Gates and Richard Branson only fund research into change
Because they profit from inventions which bare patents in their names

Sequestering carbon from the air and brightening the clouds
Will wave goodbye to clear blue skies, sunrises and sundowns
A constant state of grey, rainbows of sulphur dioxide
Crops fail as droughts persist, the oceans acidify
There’s no ethical dilemmas in the schemes being suggested
The risks are designed so that only the global poor are left affected
The benefits are that we can carry on with our lives
The downsides are that millions suffer, starve and die

Mother, monster, mother, monster
The beauty from which we came is now the beast which we’ve created
Monster, mother, monster, mother
Building a better world ain't rocket science it’s far more complicated

They would rather regulate the sun than the oil industry
We haven’t even tried plan A yet still push for plan B
Machines will pump pollutants up into the stratosphere
For more machines to suck them back out from the atmosphere
‘Technology is our saviour, we must have faith in the market’
Failing to recognise this is how the climate crisis started
But in times of crisis high risk plans are rewarded and accepted
Top down change with no government chains and copyright protected

Push something for so long and sometimes it’s bound to push back
But when the forces at hand are so grand they respond and react
With such brutal indifference and rage it must surely repel
Not draw us towards a war between our world and ourselves
